I looked at the notes I’d written after listening to this twice in succession. I present them here unedited. “Lovely + jangly”, “silly + happy”, and a line drawing of a cat, smiling. I wrote nothing else as I was lost in a nostalgic reverie about life in 1995; if I’d been watching a Supergrass video on the Big Breakfast whilst frantically doing my Geography homework I couldn’t have been transported back in time more efficiently.
I don’t think this is limited in appeal purely to Britpop necrophiliacs – it’s confident and bouncy enough to work in it’s own right. But let’s not make too much fuss about the band as they have their A-Level to do later this year and it wouldn’t do to distract them. This isn’t distinctive enough to suggest they can do without sensible qualifications. But if they turn into either rock pigs or quantity surveyors, they’ve at least made an old man happy with this song.
