In a fantastically-ignorant act of masturbatory necrophilia, The Daily Mail has finally come across a tragic case with which to justify Sarah Sands' infamously ill-advised, non-researched 2006 scaremongering 'article' against emo, and will now proceed to milk it for all it's worth.
The inexplicable suicide of a 13-year-old girl in Kent has had Andrew Levy, for one, jumping for joy and presumably doing football-style celebratory skidding/dry-humping and self-fiving in the offices of the Most Dispicable National Newspaper 19??-20??. Although, it certainly hasn't had him doing any beyond-Wikipedia-research or anything crazy like that.
Levy twice refers to famously-supportive and fan-friendly New Jersey group My Chemical Romance as a "suicide cult" rock group, though never makes clear who or what he's quoting. (Presumably it's Sarah Sands.)
He goes on to say "The Emo phenomenon began in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is a largely teenage trend and is characterised by depression, self-injury and suicide."
He neglects to inform his ready hordes of ignorant middle class Tories that it began as an offshoot of the hardcore scene and was later deliberately misconstrued and re-applied to a conveniently-packagable sub-genre of pop punk, more accurately characterised by eyeliner, cliché and marketability. Nor does he pause to suggest depression, self-injury and suicide are staple reference points for troubled adolescents.
Tha last line in his lazy, insensitive, opportunistic and wholly-offensive article, I defy him to find any categorical proof for:
"The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die."
