Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down

It took the world eighteen long years to get from Duran Duran to Belle & Sebastian, and now, in a dramatic reversal of fortune, Mystery Jets have managed to reverse the process.

Yes, its true, their new single ‘Two Doors Down’, (not quite a Dolly Parton cover), goes from B&S to DD in a mere forty seconds.

An 80s-tastic beat and matching euphoric synth are only outclassed in authenticity by a timely sax solo; less of a nod to the music they were born into, more of a giant leap backwards, this single nonetheless harks back to the golden age of the seven inch in such a commendable way as to persuade me finally to part with a paltry sum of my jealously-guarded riches, and actually order the album.

While the rest of the band don fetching pastel suits and provide the outrageously well-executed backing vocals that have become the band’s hallmark, Blaine Harrison (back on vocals after the spectacular comeback ‘Young Love’) croons what seems like his millionth spot-on homage to the tried-and-tested genre of the unrequited love song.

Single of the year it may well be.
