Reversed vocal duties do nothing to denigrate the quality of Wild Beasts’ output on this excellent, meandering soul-search of a single.
Tom Fleming proves just as capable on lead vocals, and the irrepressible Hayden Thorpe is lurking as always with loaded falsetto to bring us such leftfield slices of wisdom as “We are so many tiny pieces”, “We are so many clambering hands” and “We are so much moulded dough”.
If the band’s unusual appearance rings a bit ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ to you, imagine Nicholas Lyndhurst replaced with Talking Heads, and the grimy alleyways of the East End replaced with the unmatched sublime scenery of the unspoilt North. (With added tarot cards.)
Single of the year it may well be.
