Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married...

I'll start with a confession - Rufus is my favoured member of the Wainwright clan. I've always had respect for Martha and loved her backup and guest vocals on Rufus's various albums and projects, but Ive never been that keen on her own music. Her debut, self-titled album didn't really do much for me, and I was unimpressed when I caught her live set at The Big Chill a few years back.

Still, I've got an open mind and when I heard the lead single, Bleeding All Over You, off this album, I knew things were different. There are still a few songs on I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too that still leave me cold, but the standout tracks here really stand out, and continue to get better and better with every single listen. Martha veers from  blues to country to folk and back again within the span of a few songs (and sometimes within the same song!) and for once all the famous names (Pete Townsend, Steely Dan, Rufus Wainwright, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle) take a secondary role and just let her get on with her own album.

Besides the aforementioned first single, the other huge standout track for me here is Tower Song. Use the attached link to have a listen and see if your view of Ms Wainwright might not be changed as well.
