Duffy’s throwback sixties look is certainly striking, although not for the reasons she imagines. She looks like the young housewife in a gritty domestic drama whose no-good husband drank all the housekeeping so she’s got to keep the nippers going on one piece of spam between the seven of them. Every time I see her I see cheap white shoes and bruised knees.
This song fits in with that fairly well, as you can see it playing over the scene where she finds Terry in bed with Nora from the fish shop and storms out, kids in tow. It’s more languorous and slinky than Mercy, and it will be hated by plenty of people who would worship it was on Back to Black with less synthetic strings and more trumpets. It’s actually perfectly accomplished soul pastiche. Buy it and she might be able to afford some football boots for little Albert.
