Innercity Pirates - Cockney Sparra

Four go mad in Fisher Price land in this, the new single by Wales’ own Innercity Pirates, complete with whistling, cute keyboards, and a (presumably) rare entreaty to kiss the lead-singer’s dusty bin lid.

Ornithologists amongst you will be aware (as I wasn’t) that the cockney sparrow is rarely seen these days – indeed passer domesticus was declared “brown bread” by the BBC way back in 2002 (when its website still looked nice). So whether ‘Cockney Sparra’, the new Innercity Pirates single, is a tribute to the much missed house bird known for its fondness of dust baths, or a much more cryptic treatise whose real meaning can only be speculated at by us mere mortals, remains to be seen.

There’s a new keyboard player since I last saw them, though whether this fact alone can explain the change in sound from the raucous rock act I saw live to the punk funk scenesters of debut single ‘Ear Sex’ to this, a much more laid-back, lovely, summery sing-along affair, who can tell?

Perhaps it’s simply indicative of the eccentricity that’s run rife though their countrymates from Gorky's to the Furrys to Los Campesinos!?

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what they do next. Good luck to ‘em! (And they’ll need it – they’re supporting Hadouken! On tour soon…)
