Dianogah - QHNNNL

Post rock is a very limited genre, always has been and always will be, as a result, the likelihood of making a decent original post rock album in this day and age is nigh on impossible. There are some bands, and only some, that have managed to maintain interest/integrity throughout their career which can be done by being innovative (Do Make Say Think) or by breaking up (Slint).

Dianogah, I’m afraid have done neither of these, that’s not too say they are bad musicians, quite the contrary, they are very good at what they do, it’s just what they do isn’t very good.

The nearest thing I could compare them to would be the little known English band San Lorenzo or even Camera Obscura in their early records, especially on the female led vocal songs. As for the more noisy numbers, these have been done better by the likes of June of 44, whilst the more angular ones such as ‘snow pants’ have been done better by ‘I’m being good’. Although there are occasional moments of interest including ‘Andrew Jackson’, there just isn’t enough to warrant repeat listens.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it was a bad album, but I would say that there are no tracks on here that haven’t been done by other bands in the past, but then again, if you love any of the artists mentioned above and want more of the same I couldn’t recommend this album more highly.
