The Donnas - existing for about 15 years now... still famous?
There's nearly one year gone since the latest album 'Bitchin'' and The Donnas are just about to finish their American-tour..
During the 15 years of playing, there is a huge change within their music, but the players remain the same – Brett Anderson on lead vocals, Maya Ford on bass, Allison Robertson on guitar and Torry Castellano on drums – a sign for the testament to the girls’ talent and dedication.
“The big difference between then and now is that we are not afraid,” stated Robertson, “We know what we want, we know how to get it, and we are ready and willing to take it. It’s almost like we have come full circle. Maybe in some way we are still the same dorky pre-teens who started playing because we love rock n’ roll. The difference is that now we are completely comfortable and confident with who we are.”
Whoever the Donna-girls are right now, during their last years, six critically acclaimed albums are released and the band tour the planet several times over to an ever-expanding, international fanbase of the so-called "Donnaholics"
The history of The Donnas shows that there is a chance to survive in today's music industry and still remain the same guys.. erm... ladys! The apparent reason for that is the deep and rare turst that exists between the four members... that is why most bands break up and The Donnas continue to stick together!
With this, The Donnas had a great growth from the first to the last of their albums.. Maybe they even become ome of the best female rock groups of this time!?! They actually get called the "American Rock'n'Roll Machine"...
So, 'Bithin'', is refreshingly loud, really more than a hard rock album than the others before, even if I wouldn't say it's metal.. as The Donnas pretend. The lyrics are mostly about a broken relationship of one of the members that stated: “Writing this record made me realize that I could get something good out of even the worst relationship. I ditched the guy and we got the songs. I’m stronger than I was yesterday because of it.” .. so seemed to be kind of a cathartic process..
Besides this, the album significantly marks The Donnas' return to complete career independence 'cause it's released on The Donnas' very own Purple Feather Records. To create this company, The Donnas had to break up with Atlantic Records, that released their lst two albums 'Gold Metal' and the huegely successful 'Spend The Night'.
Robertson: “We formed our own label because we could. That’s the beauty of it. Our whole career has been ‘The Donnas’ and ‘the label’. It makes sense to us to keep doing what we want to do and cut the crap.”
