I not infrequently fantasise about what my life would be like without the internet. Philosophically that's pointless but you get the idea. I here and now promise myself to insult the next person who says "lol" to me, let alone sends me a pixellated flower on facebook. I'm actually quite glad to have little prospect of any valentines' messages for the fact I wont be receiving any inane facebook messages. The internet's incredibly useful in a lot of ways but in a lot of ways it's been sucking my soul for years.
lol
heh.... sorry, couldn't resist. Anyway, again, well said Jeres. The interesting thing about all this to me is that it seems so ironic that a meduim that's ostensibly meant to be 'social' can be used in such self-indulgent, naval-gazing ways. Maybe it's not the fault of the technology as much as the people concerned, but we only notice them because the technology gives them a platform to publicise their narcissim. After all, if there's a boring old fart in your local pub going on about how he just bought a new telly or something, it's not the fault of the landlord, is it? Just a thought....
Why did you take it down the first time btw?
Um, well the first time was written after a couple of bottles of thunderfuck if I'm honest. I woke up and thought it would probably need some tidying up which it did. Oh the narcissism etc...
"when men were men and women made you chips on a Saturday afternoon" - now there's a quote that deserves to be printed, framed and hung on every sitting room wall in the land!
I do have to say that the whole Facebook thing gets on my nerves; it just seems like an excuse for the kind of people who can't be bothered to, like, TALK to their friends (or even email them individually).
...And it's a little like the way that the mobile 'phone has become this device for people who can't be bothered to turn up anywhere at a pre-arranged time.
or use a housephone
YEah I like house phones.
But I wouldn't worry about it - that way it wins
lost: double negatives are a no no.

How Orwellian of you
Returning to the Facebook thing: a couple of girls have commented to me about the number of blokes who don't ask for 'phone numbers or even email addresses any more, but swap Facebook IDs instead! And, as if to confirm the trend, a friend of mine who's a bit rubbish with women has a habit of asking to become Facebook 'buddies' with any he meets...
hmm, I was wondering about that the other day
specifically, if you're not (or at least don't want to appear to be) as 'rubbish with women' as you describe your friend as being, when is it polite to add a new acquaintance to your facebook heads-in-boxes collection. immediately after meeting? later? is it rude if you don't? In my opinion I reckon the fact that this should be a concern is reason enough to sack the whole thing off - there are plenty of social mores and niceties to fret about already, I reckon.
Yeah, quite frankly no one over 17 should even have the time to worry about trivia like this, in my opinion.
...That said, the irony of my wasting time posting on this subject isn't exactly lost on me.
hahahaha true. I would use the excuse that I work here - but I've taken the day off today. I should probably go and stroll round a park or something, rather than spending the day in front of the computer....
I was wondering about that, tim. Go outside!
