derivative *and* a viable form of artistic expression, i say
show me a band that isn't derivative of something or other
and i'll show you
i dunno
unicorn, or something
believe Pop Punk is one of the pinnacles of human achievement
(I)
a unicorn
what are we defining as pop punk?
erm...
i mean, noone ever goes 'Sunn O))) are so derivative, they're such an Earth rip-off'
Blink 182, Back One Out, Alkaline Trio, Something Corporate, New Found Glory
Sum 41
everything's derivative
no i draw the line at sum 41, sorry
Sunn O))) have no place in this chat!
yeah
i know
Does This Look Infected? was a good album!
just saying
ehy're as derivative as a pop punk band
just off less opular things
popular
mmm
i hate blink 182
hater!
all there songs sound the same
good girl!
i went there
no they don't
i said it

Pop Punk was tagged with Heavenly - Sort of Mine by timc
well done
you haven't heard it
that one's proto-pop-punk
Heavenly are so not pop punk
pre-proto-pop-punk
England can't DO pop punk
oh come on
it accidentally turns it into ska or hardcore
maybe a bit too jangly
its true, our voices arent whiney enough
skardcore
skagcore
The Libertines?
sounds delightful
they're not pop punk
hahah
too 60s
true
Pop Punk was tagged with Blink 182 by thesvenhunter
they're just shit
Blink 182 - Enema of the State
punk
pop
i like NOFX
masterpiece
theyre good.
nofx lost it though
blink 182 peaked as they exploded
reel big fixh
was far too far
reel big fuck off to that tim
although that was that awful ska rubbish
Iliked nofx until War on Errorism
boomtown rats
that only had ONE good song
hahaah
who invited you, Paul?
get out
you just don't like being found out
as a posturer and a liar
Boomtown Rats are not pop punk
yeah, war on errorism was a bit more politically active than musically active...
are you exposing him as a boomtown rats fan, paul?
but the boomtown rats=LEG END
that's a serious accusation
saying that I don't MIND politics - The Decline was one of the best songs/albums ever
Pop Punk was tagged with NOFX by thesvenhunter
buzzcocks
they are proto-pop punk
i know, i mean it lacked any musical genius thats all
yeah
and the last one was WORSE
tonight on DAteline NBC: To Catch A Booktown Rats Fan
Boomtown
they made this LAME song about Propagandhi
which one was the last one?
i really should learn to type
nd Propagandhi wrote a BRILLIANT one dissing them
pop punk BEEF 2006
oh right.. i should look that up
Pop Punk was tagged with Propagandhi by thesvenhunter
and tim, typings over rated, i mean, we are all sat next to each other
ok, the shop assistants aren't pop punk
presumably you are ruling out the clash on the basis that they sounded a bit reggae
the buzzcocks have to be in there first though
yes
i'm even less good at talking
:-)
listen
pop punk did not exist pre 1990

rubbish
'Love Bites' is a perfect pop-punk album
The Undertones can bite/blow/suck me
hopefully not all at once
worst band ever dot com
that's a buzzcocks album
but yeah
:-)
i would exclude the ramones on the grounds that punk cannot encompass anything derived from anything with a duck's ass haircut
Buzzcocks are good
but not as good as Stiff Little Fingers
this is like Queen trying to do green day
who aren't pop punk either
exactly tim
xactly
greenday are just...
but
greenday
but
slf were just punk
Misfits!
we need some misfits!
American Idiot - worst protest album ever
especially last caress
so gloriously offensive
Pop Punk was tagged with thesvenhunter: Sheep in wolves' clothing Q&A session by thesvenhunter
american idiot. oh dear. what is it with these bands? it always seems that their newer albums are rubbish compared to their old ones
lyrics to Propagandhi - Rock For Sustainable Capitalism and NOFX - The Marxist Brothers
indeed
system of a down, NOFX, greenday etc
that's a sad conundrum
SOAD aren't pop punk
i know,
stop talking about them then
fine
}:-(
ha what the hell face is that supposed to be?!
angry!
oh right
it has angry eyebrows
ill er stop making you angry then
cos i don't want to see your eyebrows curl like that in reallife
norme
nor_me
so it says here Avril Lavigne is pop punk
ng...
the adverts
interesting...
I heart the Adverts
but they were before '94 also, Paul
gaye advert versus avril lavigne
proto-pop punk
no she's not. she's just blonde... she wanted to be pop punk when she first started but she aint nowadays.
i rest my case
girlfriend?! what was that about...
I think it was about stealing peoples' boyfriends
yrically pretty ocmplex...
l
she's a bad person
well yeah, it was just a scary song
morally questionable
It's nice to know you guys at playlouder work hard for a living, seriously, kudos on electronically debating a genre of music within the same building for almost half an hour ;)
Misfits. All the way Tim!
half an hour? That's nothing
I could debate this for a day or two at the very least
I might create a festival of pop punk debate
h no music
no music, no tents, just debate
I could call it The Mass Debate
...
Right, an actual opinion on Pop Punk then. I believe, like many genres, it has a time and a place. For example, no-one listens to Mozart at drunken parties. That would be because Beethoven is far better. But seriously though, listening to Blink 182 as you walk through town with a slightly emotional fringe doesn't look too good either. Pop Punk is fun, full of clever hooks, often devoid of much talent, but so what?
and...erm...Mass Debating for 1 or 2 days? You're going to regret that the next day....
Anyway, back to the task in hand...
um...oh...I honestly didn't mean the double entendre there...
You were saying about Green Day losing it with American Idiot, that was because it became too polished and began to move away from the raw energy and sheer pointlessness which appealed to us in the first place. I don't want to contemplate the clever use of digital effects processing on the vocal track to American Idiot, or contemplate the possible events leading to the death of St Jimmy, while I'm raving, thankyou.
he needs a nosecoder
like the dude from Avenged Sevenfold
they should sing through their mouths

Thanks for the NOFX vs PROPAGHANDI BEEF 2006 heads up. Nofx had some kind of point in there amongst the half-assed nonsensical lyrics, but it seems Propaghandi inevitably kicked their asses by being wittier and being more right (ha). But how do they SOUND, eh?
The first track on the new Offspring album has a chorus exactly like that of "So long and goodnight" by My Chemical Romance. Luckily this is broken up by their trademark buzz-saw guitar verses. The kids'll never know!
Pop punk = a contradiction in terms
And I'm surprised that no one has voiced quite that opinion yet
The Buzzcocks = post-Motown punk. Poppy structure and lyrical themes, but none of this predictable major chord progression that we're forced to endure nowadays.
I just want to go on the record to say that Green Day have never, EVER appealed to me.
U2 began life as a (sort of) punk band - would any of their early albums count as 'pop punk' in this context?
The term 'pop punk' itself is a hollow, corporate marketing ploy and smacks of clueless (posing as clued-up) music-biz wankery.
I think expecting genre tags to make etymological s
